Look up Maltese dogs or dog breeds anywhere on the internet or telephone book and you are likely to see the term fur baby before long. Rescue groups, breeders and pet lovers frequently use the term to describe their beloved canine companions. It is not known who invented the term, but, like many accurately descriptive terms, it has rapidly become part of the language over the past few years.

Actually dogs of any breed can be, and are, called fur babies if their families consider them their babies with fur, but Maltese dogs probably have the term applied to them more than some others because of their cuddly appearance. Large brown eyes and button noses surrounded by white fur naturally make us think of plush toys and baby dolls.

Thinking of Maltese dogs as fur babies likely dates back to ancient times. In England the Maltese dog was once known as the Roman ladies’ dog. Swiss lake dwellers were said to breed Maltese-type dogs for their small appearance. The image of a Maltese-type small dog is seen on an ancient Etruscan amphora. Egyptian artwork shows a dog resembling a Maltese that was likely worshipped by the Egyptians, and the Roman Emperor Claudius kept a Maltese dog, as did the Roman governor Publius of Malta.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) the dog breed standard for the Maltese dog is preferably four to six pounds, and not over seven pounds, the average weight for a newborn human baby. Maltese dogs should be covered from head to tail with long, silky white fur, another good reason for the fur baby appellation. The head should be of medium length, proportionate to the rest of the Maltese’s body, with a skull slightly rounded on top. A rounded appearance is another thing that human beings find cute and babyish, because human infants have rounded heads and facial features. The Maltese dog’s ears hang down, giving the face and head an overall large appearance, which is another feature of human babies. The body is described as compact, clearly another feature of human babies that also applies to Maltese dogs. The hair is silky and when it is tied up into a topknot it emphasizes the rounded, babyish head. The Maltese dog’s temperament is described as gentle and trusting, yet lively and playful, endearing him as a babyish companion.

Perhaps the best way to see why a Maltese dog is often referred to as a fur baby is to see members of the dog breed in action. If you are lucky enough to know someone with a Maltese dog, watching the family playing with their friend will give you some idea. Watching Maltese dogs in the window of a pet store, playing with their littermates, will warm your heart and have you thinking of what cute furry puppies they are. Videos of little fur babies taking treats from their human parents or still images of the cute little guys and girls showing off their grooming illustrate the point better than any words.

Camille Goldin, a dog lover, shares her thoughts on why Maltese Dogs are called fur babies. Visit TrainPetDog.com to learn more about Dog Breeds.

This breed is so named as it was originally used to protect, and herd the sheep. In the ending years of nineteenth century “Captain Max” developed this particular breed. However, at present due to discriminating breeding, they are able to perform tasks or work in environment involving obedience, protection and tracking.

They are very versatile animals and have proven so in a variety of tasks. They have been involved in jobs like protecting people and guarding their properties/possessions; guide the handicapped like blind; or helped those in distress or in need of treatment. They have worked for the military, police, rescue teams and helped in detective work. Despite being involved in above, they are faithful, loyal, loving pets and love to socialize with people plus other animals. As per the 2006 figures of the Kennel Club, it is the most popular among others in United Sates and the United Kingdom.

It is a sturdy, strong and powerful one with a strong and muscular body. Its height from the shoulder can vary between twenty-two inches and twenty-six inches. Their weight can range from sixty pounds to a maximum of hundred ten pounds. They have a medium length coat which is coarse but beautiful. They also have an undercoat which is softer and requires daily brushing due to frequent shedding of hairs from the coat. The coat color varies and can be black-tan and black; golden or grey color with hairs being black at the end. Their required diet consists five cups of dog food (dry) complete with minerals and vitamins or can be one and half cans to two and half cans of good quality meat mixed with biscuits of equal parts.

When things are normal, they have a balanced, poised, and calm personality. However, once the situation changes, they become alert, on guard, and protecting in nature. Besides that, they can quickly change their roles as per the circumstances, they can be companions (playful), herding dogs (watch sheep), watch dogs/guardians (protect), or guides for binds (helping).

They can be lovable social house pets provided they are given proper socialization training; especially the young ones or puppies. They are intelligent, forever alert, observant, and eager. They are sensitive to the changes of the surroundings and to the moods, and attitudes of the people around them. Therefore, training and socialization is imperative for honing their natural skills of observing and adapting to the various and varied circumstances. If proper training is not done they can be aggressive and dangerous. If puppies are not trained they can grow into vicious adults with a bullying, and hostile behavior. They can become aggressive suddenly and get scared of certain people or surroundings.

Since, they were bred to be protectors, they have a natural tendency to fearlessly protect anything that it considers within its own territory or den and pack. Considering the home situation, where they are pets, the den can be house property or car; whereas the pack can be members of the family.

Unlike some breeds of small dogs, Miniature Pinschers, or Min Pins, were not bred to be lap dogs or foot warmers. They were bred to hunt small animals and guard their families, so their instincts are to hunt. During the 1830’s min pins were bred in Germany to take the place of cats on ships, hunting and killing rodents.

Min pins’ ancestors were Italian greyhounds and dachshunds. Although min pins constitute a relatively young breed, Italian greyhounds go back thousands of years, and were used in Europe to hunt rats, mice and falcons. Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers, rabbits and prairie dogs, so it is easy to see how min pins got their hunting instincts.

They have been called a big dog in a small body. As such, they must dealt with firmly or they can become tyrannical. Min pins’ instinct for hunting can lead them to attack almost anything, so their families must be careful not to leave small objects lying around where their dogs can get them. Small objects left within the reach of min pins can lead to trips to the veterinarian to remove bottle caps, toys etc. from their stomachs. Puppies are naturally curious, and that goes double for hunting breeds. .

Min pin puppies are not usually a good idea for younger children, who tend to play roughly with pets. The puppies are better off in homes with older children who will treat them more gently. If they are handled roughly, min pins are likely to respond by biting, so they make good pets for older children or active adults who will play with them appropriately and give them plenty of physical activity.

A tired dog is a happy dog so powerful little min pins should be exercised regularly. Their natural hunting instincts make min pins natural athletes at chasing things, so make time to throw a ball or other toy for your dog. Toys that hold treats can also simulate hunting for your min pin. Place the toys inside the toy, show it to your min pin, and throw it. Your friend will be happy to chase it and remove all the treats, not unlike a hunter chasing down and consuming its prey.

Agility training is also a good way to channel min pins’ hunting instincts into a harmless, fun outlet. The sport grew from horse racing, and as such has obstacles such as a horse might jump over, and much more. Tunnels are one kind of obstacle, consisting simply of an open tube for the dog to enter at one end and exit at the other, or a covered tube that requires the dog to go through the cover. A catwalk is an elevated horizontal walkway with inclined walkways at each end. The dog has to walk up, across, and down the other side. A-frames are triangles that require the dog to walk up one side and down the other. Weave poles are a line of vertical poles that the min pin must weave in and out of without knocking any over. They are a true test of agility and min pins are good at the test. Teeter-totters, or see-saws, are just like the child’s toy seen in playgrounds. The min pin has to walk onto the teeter-totter at the lower end, continue to walk to the middle, and, making the see-saw’s sides reverse position, go down the other side. Being energetic all their lives, min pins can often tackle agility competitions successfully after the age of 10. Have fun with your min pin.
